About the Twitter Chat

Join World Education Services (Twitter handle: @WorldEdServices) for a Twitter chat in recognition of Welcoming Week (September 9 - 18, 2022). Welcoming Week is a global movement, begun in 2012, in which communities come together to proclaim welcoming values. This year’s theme, #WhereWeBelong, celebrates the places and spaces that create a sense of belonging.

The discussion will center on how we can create places in our communities where everyone belongs, as well as how we can go about making the systems and spaces in our communities more welcoming for immigrants and refugees.

During the Twitter chat, we’ll also explore why recognizing the intersectionality of newcomers’ identities is so important to the concept of welcoming. Newcomers arrive to the U.S. and Canada with multiple social identities including their immigration status, race, gender, and sexuality; all these identities shape their individual settlement experiences and trajectories.

Discussion topics:

  • Defining characteristics of welcoming communities
  • The importance of coalition building in achieving welcoming communities
  • How the shifting nature of work (and the rise in remote work) are changing the social fabric of communities, and how newcomers cultivate a sense of belonging in their communities

We hope you’ll join us on on September 14 for this #WhereWeBelong Welcoming Week Twitter chat.
