WES Canada’s 20th Anniversary: Virtual Celebration Series

Fall 2020

Join the WES leadership team along with local, national, and international experts virtually as we celebrate our progress over 20 years and continue important conversations to ensure the success of immigrants, refugees, and international students in Canada.

About

WES is proud to announce its 20th anniversary in Canada. To celebrate this exciting milestone, WES is hosting a series of virtual events in October and November featuring the WES leadership team along with local, national, and international experts in the fields of immigrant integration, international mobility, workforce development, and inclusion.

WES Canada began operating out of necessity—to address an existing barrier confronting internationally educated professionals: Their academic credentials were not understood, accepted, or recognized. Twenty years on, WES credential evaluations are recognized by more than 2,500 higher education institutions, regulatory bodies, employers, and government entities across Canada and the United States. As a non-profit social enterprise with an ongoing commitment to helping internationally educated professionals achieve their academic and career goals, we believe in a future when barriers to the understanding or acceptance of international qualifications and skills no longer exist.

Join us in celebrating our 20th anniversary virtually as we continue important conversations to ensure Canada’s economic growth and the success of newcomers and the communities in which they live and work.

A TOAST TO 20 YEARS IN CANADA
October 23, 2020, 2.00 - 3.00 p.m. EDT
Join WES as we celebrate our progress and the milestones we’ve reached over 20 years in Canada. Shamira Madhany, managing director for Canada, will lead a thoughtful reflection on two decades of impact in collaboration with our many partners across the country.

The WES leadership team will also discuss WES’ priorities as we seek to shape an economic recovery that is inclusive of the skills and contributions of immigrants, refugees, and international students in Canada.

2020 has been a tumultuous year. Join us virtually as we reflect on progress and find inspiration for the work ahead.

WEBINAR: THE FUTURE OF RECOGNITION
October 28, 2020, 1.00 - 2.00 p.m. EDT
In this webinar, we discuss persistent gaps in the mobility of skills and education and the future state of credential recognition.

You’ll hear from leaders who are transforming credential evaluation models and processes—and how we understand and recognize skills and credentials—with the aim of improving the labour market integration of internationally educated professionals.

WEBINAR: THE INCLUSIVE WORKFORCE
November 18, 2020, 1.00 - 2.00 p.m. EST
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to massive job losses across industries, but newcomers to Canada are among those most affected. In a June survey of more than 1,800 WES applicants, 24 percent of permanent residents and 26 percent of international students had either temporarily or permanently lost their primary source of income. Immigrants are often first to be let go, and last to be rehired.

If Canada is to set itself up for a prosperous future, employers need to ensure greater equality in hiring and career mobility.

In this webinar, four industry leaders will discuss the implications of diversity, inclusion, and equality in the Canadian workplace.

You’ll come away from this webinar with a new perspective and inspiration to better manage your diverse workforce.

LIVE ANNOUNCEMENT: WES MARIAM ASSEFA FUND GRANTEES IN CANADA
November 23, 2020, 1.00 - 1.45 p.m. EST
Join us live as we announce the first cohort of Canadian organizations receiving grants from the WES Mariam Assefa Fund.

Earlier this year, the Fund launched in Canada, and has now selected its first grantee partners to lead efforts that build career pathways for immigrants and refugees, support worker-driven change to improve the quality and safety of low-wage jobs, and enable immigrant-led innovation in the workforce and educational systems.

In this session, the Fund will announce its inaugural grantee partners in Canada and discuss how each partner will work to improve job quality, equitable economic mobility, and inclusion for immigrants and refugees in Canada. Through these initial grantee partners, the Fund also aims to surface insights and approaches that can be shared with the broader field, as well as inform the Fund’s future work.

The WES Mariam Assefa Fund is the philanthropic arm of WES. Through grantmaking, investing, partnerships, and field-building, the Fund supports catalytic efforts to dismantle the barriers that prevent immigrants and refugees from accessing quality employment and integrating into the workforce. WES has long pursued the mission of enabling individuals to fully use their education and talent. The Fund offers a new way of achieving this goal by bringing new resources to organizations and the wider field, and by striving to create more equitable systems for immigrant and refugee workers.
