With nearly one in four Canadians born abroad, immigrants and immigration are central to Canada’s economic future.
Today, Canada continues to look to immigration as a solution to critical labour shortages. While many newcomers are selected based on their education, language skills, and professional experience, immigrants arrive through diverse pathways and with varied backgrounds. Despite this, many still face barriers to full participation in the labour market.
This research shows that while employment and participation rates for immigrants have improved, challenges such as credential recognition, systemic bias, and limited networks continue to limit their economic potential.
The findings show that addressing these challenges is both an economic and policy imperative. Improving labour market integration can strengthen productivity, support inclusive growth, and ensure immigration benefits both individuals and the broader economy.
